Pigtail Coconut Mask

$18.00 $14.40

Coconut masks known in Spanish as Mascaras de Coco are whimsical and colorful faces, animals, fruits and suns made of a coconut shell half by Nahuatl artists who live in the Mezcala region along the Balsas River Basin in Guerrero State. The coconuts are collected in the coastal area of Guerrero. Once the coconut shell has been cut in halves and cleaned it is soaked in water for 10 to 15 minutes; then, the outside of the shell is scraped and cleaned with a knife and later is sanded until its surface becomes smooth. These coconut masks are beautifully hand painted and are coated with a varnish finish; their dimensions average to 7″ H  x  5″ W
