Bright Gold Satin Tehuantepec Huipil

$68.60 $54.88

This gorgeous huipil is from the Zapotec culture and was created about 20 years ago. The piece was made with special antique sewing machines. The garment features the “cadenilla” technique. “Cadenilla” embroidery is produced on a foot peddled Singer chain-stitch sewing machine, know to have arrived in Tehuantepec by 1890. It is achieved by over-layering rows of stitches in contrasting colours to make geometric patterns that often appear to have an optical illusion effect. The design process of this technique is considered the most difficult to master. This type of huipil was often worn by Frida Kahlo! Fits small up to a medium and can be worn loose or more fitted depending on your preference.
