These absolutely stunning yarn pieces and beaded offering bowls were hand-crafted by the Huichol, who are indigenous to the mountainous areas of northern Jalisco and parts of Nayarit, in western Mexico. The Huicholes revere the deer, the sun (fire), and peyote as a sacred trinity, and use spiritual and culturally significant imagery in all of their art. These pieces are created by pressing yarn and beads into beeswax, a very delicate and exacting process. The offering bowls are made of gourds and are used in the spiritual tradition of reciprocity practiced by the Huichol people of western Mexico. Reciprocity means that in order to receive, one also has to give back by making an offering to the spirits, the guardians of the earth: rain, sun, wind, fire, and ancestors.
