October 2007 Collector's Corner
Featuring John & Melissa Torres

Melissa and I started out collecting Oaxacan wood carvings in 1991. We were at my brother's wedding in McAllen, and Melissa "discovered" the popular carvings across the border. That was the start of our passion for Mexican folk art. We now have nearly 60 Oaxacan wood carvings. Over the years our interests expanded to include masks (more than 40, most are old and were used in dances), bronze sculptures, paintings, copper and clay. Our most recent acquisitions are from the great pot-makers in Tonala, and various painters.
