Marcia's Minute

There's something
about this time of year that I just love. Right
before the hectic holiday season, we get a
chance to celebrate one of my favorite holidays:
Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead.
Dia de los
Muertos is like a "family reunion" for the
indigenous people in Mexico. They honor their
ancestors and loved ones with feasting and
celebration for two full days at the beginning
of November.
My first
intimate experience with Dia de los Muertos
was in 1979, the year that I started this
business. I was graciously invited to
stay with a Zapotec Indian family in the sarape
and rug weaving village of Teotitlan del Valle.
I was thrilled! Imagine my good fortune of being
able to watch them prepare their family's altar &
the feast foods for the celebration, and being
able to actually sit and celebrate with the
family on these days and evenings!
The experience so
inspired me that when I returned home, I built
my own home altar and "offrenda" the next year on Dia de
los Muertos, and I dedicated it to my
grandmother. I reflected on her life and the
things that I had learned from her. As I created
the altar, I gathered special objects that had
spiritual meaning to me. Since
then, I have created a special Dia de los
Muertos altar almost every year. I love
taking the time to reflect on my own life and the lives
of my family and loved ones that have died.
As usual, this
year we have our altar up at the store, so we
hope you get a chance to come by to see it.
Perhaps it will inspire you to create your own!
Additionally, we
will also be setting up a special altar for our
friend, Mimi McKinney, to honor her memory.
Please come by to see these altars and a 15
minute short film about the Day of the Dead in
Mexico, by the famous Charles and Ray Eames.
Saludos,
Marcia Lucas
