Marcia Lucas, Owner of El Interior In late January, Charlie (my husband) and I led a wonderful group of folks to Oaxaca. Our focus was to visit the pre-Columbian sites of Mitla and Monte Alban, and savor the incomparable tastes, sounds and texture of Oaxaca. We scheduled many visits with the folk artists themselves and shopping became an immediate priority! Everyone stocked up on incredible bargains from our favorite artisans: Aguilar sisters, wood figures from Gabino Reyes, and rugs from the Montaño family; wooden, carved figures from la Union and San Martin; pottery and sculptures from Ocotlan, and even some mescal fresh from the still. Our friend and fellow traveler, Roseanne Reeser was eloquent in her description: “We loved every minute of our week in Oaxaca and our totally congenial group of travelers. The B&B was lovely, with superb Oaxacan specialties for breakfast every day. Marcia guided us to the important historic ruins of Monte Alban and Mitla and to the homes of some of the best folk artists in the region. We saw the artists at work, talked to them and their families, and purchased exquisite works of art for very reasonable prices. When I look at the beautiful Gabino Reyes carving of the agave with the tiny Virgen de Guadalupe at its heart, I'm instantly transported back to Gabino's family home where we were so warmly welcomed. Even with all the planned activities, Marcia made sure to indulge individual travel goals like seeing the "world's largest living biomass" (an amazing tree) and mezcal made the old fashioned way (an amazing process and product). We spent leisurely afternoons exploring the city and enjoying the evening scene at the zocalo. It was a magical week. You don't know Oaxaca 'til you've traveled there with Marcia and Charlie. We highly recommend this tour.” Louise Reeser, Rose Ann Reeser and John Payne Oaxaca is s timeless gem of hospitality, music, cuisine, artistry and patrimony and incomparable beauty. We will be offering more tours to the Oaxaca Valley in the coming months. Monte Albán was the ancient capital of the Zapotecs and one of the first cities in Mesoamerica. During its zenith, it was also one of the most populated cities of the Americas. It was founded approximately 500 years BC and flourished until 750 AD. | |
