Oaxacan Elder, Midwife, and Herbalist Discusses Approaches to Health and Healing this Thursday Dona Enriqueta Contreras, a Zapotec elder, midwife and herbalist, will discuss her traditional healing techniques this Thursday, June 25th at 7:30 p.m. at El Interior, 1009 West Lynn Street. Refreshments will be served at 7:00 p.m. Cost is $15, call 474-8680 to RSVP. Contreras, from the southern state of Oaxaca, Mexico, is a member of the third largest indigenous group in Mexico, and a descendant from a line of traditional healers whose knowledge dates back 5,000 years on the Meso-American continent. She has dedicated her life to and excels in traditional medicine, herbology and midwifery. She accumulated her ethno-botanical knowledge living in the Sierra Juarez Mountains north of Oaxaca City. As a young woman, she became a traditional midwife, with a successful practice spanning more than 60 years. She has become one of Mexico’s premier midwives. In the course of her career, she has never lost a baby or a mother during childbirth, an extraordinary record even by western standards. On June 25th Dona Enriqueta Contreras will speak on the use of the wild plants for herbal healing remedies and medicines, the traditional Zapotec Temezcal, a type of traditional Sweat Lodge, and the Limpia, a traditional healing and clearing energetic practice. She will share her recipe for her special herbal and flower infusion for the Temezcal. |
