Marcia's Minute
Spring is Here! The weather is warmer and the
new spring fashions
are arriving, so let's kick off this
season with Santa Fe designer Karen
Wilkinson's trunk show featuring her exquisite Saltillo Sarape
Jackets and a brand new selection of jackets and
vests made from Guatemalan fabric.
Next, we've got the most INCREDIBLE new selection of
San Antonino (Oaxacan Wedding) dresses and
blouses that I literally just brought back from
Mexico yesterday. It is truly the largest and
most varied selection I've ever had in the
store, so you will definitely want to come check
out all of the new ones that we have.
We've also received in some light and airy
blouses from Mexico and a large assortment of
new jewelry that you will start to see in the
store
within the next week. Additionally, we will be
receiving new CMC Click and San Miguel Sandals
within the next couple of weeks, so we have lots
to look forward to.
Lastly, I've gotten some really special pieces
of folk art by artists like Guillermina &
Demetrio Aguilar, Gabino Reyes, Adelina Pedro,
Maria Jimenez, and more. We've got some in the
store now, and we'll have even more in the next
couple of weeks. So stop in soon, there is a lot to see!
Happy Spring!
Saludos,
Marcia Lucas

Why is the
mermaid (La
Sirena) such a
common theme in
Mexican Folk
Art?
Mary
The mermaid is
associated with
water and
rain--and
helping bring
the rain. For
example, in
Oaxaca, rain is
sometimes scarce
for years, not
unlike here in
Texas. The late
Robert K. Wynn
(folk art
collector
extraordinaire)
talks about the
Oaxaquenos
putting mermaids
in their
nativity scenes
as a way to
insure good
rains for the
coming year's
growing season.
A common theme
in Haiti is to
see mermaids and
mermen used as
water guardians
at their water
sources:
springs,
fountains and
wells. |
