Marcia's Minute
This month, I’m thrilled to announce
our big coupe of having internationally
acclaimed photographer George O. Jackson here at
El Interior Thursday, March 6th, at 7pm. He will
speak and show a preview of "El Cuerpo Adornado",
an exhibition of powerful, life-size color gicle
prints to be shown at the San Antonio Museum of
Art on March 15th. Through his
striking images, he explores indigenous
ethno-aesthetics through contemporary body
painting among inhabitants of the Sierra
Huasteca region of eastern Mexico.
Jackson says, "During festival times, indigenous
folk cultures are steeped in the cultural
activity that defines them. Much like a flower
in bloom, the celebrants seem to release their
essence – the essence of Mexico. My intention
was to try to make art out of their art by
attempting to capture this essence in
photographs." George O. Jackson comes to us
fresh from his current exhibit at the
Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of
Natural History, so please join us while we host
one of the most accomplished photographers of
Mexican ceremonial life today. We are incredibly
honored that he will be with us!
So spring is almost here in Central Texas in the
Hill Country. It is so exciting to see our new
clothing coming in; great styles from CMC CLICK
and of course, our wonderful bohemian ethnic
styles from Mexico. I am continually awed by the
quality of handwork that the Mayan women in
Chiapas do. Their rococo hand-embroidery work is
stunning. The beautiful blouses are even all
hand-sewn. I have been wearing them for several
years, and I toss them into the washing machine
(sometimes in a lingerie bag, sometimes not) and
dry them in the dryer. This includes the
beautiful satin rococo blouses. RARELY, do I
bother to press them with an iron.
This month, we have some delicious tamale
recipes to share with you, courtesy of the
excellent Oaxacan chef Pilar Cabrera. These are
traditional Oaxacan recipes learned from her
grandmother. I highly recommend her cooking
school Casa de Sabores in Oaxaca, Oaxaca.
Charlie, my husband, and I have taken several
classes with her and she is an excellent teacher
as well as chef. So be sure to read about Pilar,
and her wonderful Bed & Breakfast and Cooking
School, in this month's newsletter and take
advantage of the recipes that she has so
graciously shared with us! Saludos,
Marcia Lucas

A couple of weeks ago, I
came in to pick up 8 large milagros (sacred hearts)
for an armoire I was painting for a customer of
mine. I've done 7 pieces for her, and she has some
great art and folk pieces, and a generally colorful
and ethnic leaning house.
Leola Perez

Thank you so much Leola for submitting these
photos! The piece is amazing and you have remarkable
talent!
