Marcia's Minute
What a delightful Spring we have had temperature
wise! Sometimes
on the extra cool side, but Spring it is, not
instant summer. Hurray!
We have such wonderful new things in. Clothing
for Cinco de Mayo and Mexican Fiestas that are
happening soon; gifts for Mothers Day; and just
in case Mexican style and less formal weddings
"ranch" style weddings may be on your agenda, we
have you covered, and perhaps the perfect
wedding gift as well.
We also FINALLY received in the black Guayabera
shirts that we have been waiting for! We had so
many requests for them, especially after Jimmy
Smits was recently seen sporting one on a cover
of a magazine. We have always known how good
they look on, so it is exciting that everyone
else is beginning to see that also!
Soon our new shipment of San
Miguel shoes will arrive as well as a new batch
of papel picado banners (paper flags), oil
cloth, and folk art. Come by and see us!
Also, thank you to June Griffin Garcia and the
Candela Dancers for the wonderful show they put
on for our April 5th neighborhood block party.
June is also a wonderful Spanish teacher who
offers conversational spanish classes for
adults. Her website is
http://spanishatugusto.com/ . And, thank you
to the wonderful Fulmore Middle School Mariachi
Band who also played for us that weekend under
the direction of Meredith McAlmon. They were
wonderful!
Saludos,
Marcia Lucas

Cinco
de Mayo ("The Fifth of May" in Spanish) is a
national holiday in Mexico which is also
widely celebrated in the United States. It
commemorates the victory of Mexican forces
led by General Ignacio Zaragoza over the
French occupational forces in the Battle of
Puebla on May 5, 1862.

famous fabric, and now they're here! Soft,
lightweight, and comfortable, you'll absolutely love
them, and just in time for the Texas heat! Also in
are the much sought-after Guayabera shirts, in both
100% cotton and 100% linen.

What was old is new again! These gorgeous dresses
(also known as Mexican Wedding Dresses) that were
once so common, are now collector's items as fewer
people now make them and each one can take up to
several months to complete.

I
would love to see more colorful fabrics that
could be used as
bed spreads for king
size beds. Also would love to see more hand
painted tiles that fit together and make a
picture. Thanks.
Judy
Thanks Judy. Actually, we have quite a few
different textiles to be used for bedspreads right
now. Besides the gorgeous Guatemalan Zacualpas that
we normally carry, right now we have two INCREDIBLE
bedspreads made from organic Texas cotton, and woven
in Guatemala. These are the same bedspreads that a
hotel in Antiqua has been using for 15 years,
without them fading. The colors are incredible.
Additionally, we have a nice selection of the
large version of hand-woven textiles like the
picture above. Some have multi-colored embroidery,
and some have single. In order to make them into a
bedspread, you would simply add muslin to the edges
to increase it to the dimensions that you want. The
result is spectacular!
Although we do have a selection of
hand-painted tiles that fit together to make a
picture, if you are looking for something more
specific, remember that Marcia often looks for
specific items for people on her trips, so let us
know and we'll put in a special request! Thanks for
your comment!
