My first passion is pre-Columbian art,
which I began collecting in the mid-1960's after being introduced to one
of the late Stanley Marcus' art dealers. I was lucky because at that
time one could obtain authentic pieces from reputable antique art
dealers at reasonable prices. More than a decade of collecting resulted
in ownership of more than 100 pieces.
However, one of the results of more
than 30 years of travel throughout Mexico (and then living there for
eight years) was a growing interest in Mexican folk art. I had the
pleasure of meeting many of the nation's maestros and visiting them
in their homes. Again, I was lucky because of a good friend, the
late Arturo Olivares.
Arturo was director of the Casa de las
Arteseneas for the State of Michoacan, a state agency set up to
promote the region's folk art. Arturo introduced me to many artisans
and directed me to many others. It was his guidance that led to the
extensive collection I now enjoy.
