Santos, Exvotos, Retablos, Nichos & Bultos

Clothing and Folk Art from Mexico

When the Spanish came to Mexico in the 1500's they brought Catholicism with them. Missionary priests, intent on telling the story of the saints and Christ to the indigenous people, used paintings and figures to relay the stories that meant so much to them. Over time, lay people continued telling these stories, creating visuals in their own unique way. Today, this art form has both secular and cultural aspects.

Santos are religious figures, ideally (but not always) created by a santero, a saint maker.

Exvotos are, traditionally, paintings on tin that are signed and dated, like personal thank you notes to God. They tell publicly why the painter is saying thank you, perhaps for a recovery from illness or other misfortune, in a very public way. Though personal expressions of faith, exvotos are left  on church altars or hung in chapels. The first exvotos were Italian; the practice spread through Europe and was brought to the New World. Today, exvotos can be drawings on paper.

Retablos traditionally are two-dimensional paintings on tin or pine of a saint or about a religious theme. In Mexico, "retablos" and "exvotos" are sometimes used interchangeably, but retablo most correctly refers to sacred images painted on wooden panels behind altars.

Nichos are small, painted, and embellished shadow boxes that hold images of virgins, saints, folk heroes, day of the dead figures and other cultural icons for the home altar. Some have doors or other architectural features.

Bultos are three-dimensional statues of Christ, virgins, saints, or other religious figures that are carved and covered with gesso and painted. Sometimes the statue is clothed.
