Hojalata, the craft of pressing,
cutting, folding, and decorating sheets of tin is one of Mexico's oldest
traditions. Mirror surrounds, display cases, boxes, lamps (called
luminarios), and ornaments of all kinds are constructed from this
lightweight, malleable metal element. Tin sheets are pressed and cut by
hand to form an object. The object is embellished by tapping, punching,
piercing, or pressing lines into the tin. Constructed objects, like
mirror surrounds and display cases, are combined with glass or mirrored
glass and soldered in place. Some artisans leave the finish a natural
shiny tin color or oxidize the tin for an antiqued, pewter look. Others
lacquer the piece to look like copper or bronze or paint it in bright
colors.
Ornate tiles, especially talavera tiles from Puebla, are often
combined with the tin to produce excellent mirror surrounds and boxes.
The tiles show off their traditional colors in cobalt blue, yellow,
rusty-red, and green over a cream background in Spanish - Arabic
patterns or floral designs. Traditional
floral designs include sunflowers and calla lilies. Contemporary designs
include talavera tiles with suns and moons.
