Candelario Medrano and Family |

Jalisco
Famed for being the
birthplace of Mexico's finest traditional pottery,
Tonalá and sister cities Tlaquepaque and Santa Cruz de la Huerta, both
in the state of Jalisco, continue the vibrant tradition today.
One of the Jalisco pioneers was Candelario Medrano, who shaped clay and
wire to provide a humorous and affectionate record of Mexican life. His roosters, carousels, Noah’s
arks, and sheep are part of the Rockefeller collection at the Museum of Modern Art
in New York. Now his children and grand-children Maurilla, Juan José,
Serapio, and Juana Corral de la Medrano and new in-law entrepreneurs like Oscar Ortega
López (whose father was Master Folk Artist Eleuterio Ortega), continue the legacy.
The brightly painted work in crude clay
with wired pieces
is still some of the best folkloric representation in the area. El
Interior is proud to feature several highly collectable folk art pieces from this
very famous family.

#Med13 Set of Tastuane
Dancers
This tableau of individually crafted and differentiated pottery figures
(on a pottery base) are sitting in miniature chairs watching St. John.
Crafted by an Ortega from Santa Cruz de las Huertas, Jalisco and working
in the Medrano tradition, the tableau depicts an important aspect of the
Tastuane's defeat of the Spaniards during the Conquest. The artist, who
died in the mid-1980s, was well versed in the story. He made the masks
for the town's tastuane dancers for years.
In excellent condition.
