Guerrero Pottery |

![]() From the Mezcala region of central Guerrero, this style of pottery features terracotta earth tones over a cream colored wash. The hand built and very striking "Monas" or female figures rest on the hems of their circular skirts and hold objects dear to them in their arms. Originally they held children and fully invoked the universal mother and child theme. Today they embrace animals, birds, baskets and other objects, and on their heads wear elaborate headdresses and crowns. Some are depicted as angels. According to Marion Oettinger, Jr., author of Folk Treasures of Mexico, "the unusually shaped dolls with imploring eyes and head shapes are reminiscent of pre-Hispanic figurative pieces." The tradition includes other figures such as horses, pigs, and include coin banks - most notably the piggy banks found below.
