Guatemalan Huipiles

A huipil is an Aztec or Nauhuatl word referring to a Mesoamerican woman's upper body garment. The Guatemalan Huipil is a native or indigenous woman's garment and is basically still in it's native form. Most of the huipiles are woven on a back-strap, pre-Hispanic type of loom, by a single woman for her own use or perhaps a family member; some are woven on the larger treadle loom. Each huipil has special pattern associated with a particular village. Thus when a woman went to market, people could always identify where she was from.

Below is a sampling of our rather large collection of vintage huipiles, and they are incredible--the pictures hardly do them justice! Great on multiple body types--they look fantastic worn either loose or more fitted. Each one is so unique; and it is easy to give them different looks by pairing them with either a pico or curvy skirt--or to simply wear them with jeans! Either way, you've got great Bohemian Chic Style!
 

Please note that the irregularities on vintage huipiles only add to the uniqueness and beauty of each piece. Remember, they are made by hand and are each an art piece! It is very common that the older huipiles have small head or arm holes that are cut open (or can be cut open) for modern usage.
