Gorky Gonzalez
Gorky Gonzalez, founder and artistic director of Alfarería Tradicionál, began his studies under his father, the sculptor Rodolfo Gonzalez. In 1962, Gorky Gonzalez built an artistic foundry in San Miguel de Allende. He founded a pottery workshop in Guanajuato in order to reproduce the traditional Majolica of the region. In 1965, he was granted a scholarship to study in Japan, under the artists Tsuji Seimei and Kei Fijiwara, considered Japan's national living treasures.

Since his return from Japan, Gorky Gonzalez has devoted himself to the preservation of the traditional Majolica technique in Mexico, utilizing the original designs used during the colonial period. Alfarería Tradicionál has become the most important Majolica workshop in Mexico.

In 1992, the President of Mexico awarded Gorky Gonzalez The National Award of Sciences and Arts. Read more about Gorky Gonzalez in Great Masters of Mexican Folk Art.
