Enedina Vasquez

Enedina Vasquez is an artist from Atzompa, a village located very close to Oaxaca City and just a few miles from the archaeological site of Monte Albán. Using innovation that she takes great pride in, Enedina broke from tradition by creating new designs and techniques in clay that has won her commendation from the ceramics community.

Enedina and her sister, Angelica Vasquez, learned their art from their parents. Both her mother (a midwife) and her father, along with Dolores Porras, trained under the famous Teodora Blanco. Teodora Blanco (1928-80) was a major Mexican folk artist. An innovator, she was a teenager when she invented the distinctive animal musicians, now common in the village. While in her late twenties she began to make her female figurines, for which she is best known. Blanco constantly developed the basic form, but her main interest was surface decoration, which she achieved with her famous style of clay appliqué.

Enedina took Blanco's technique that she inherited to new and exciting levels. Using natural colors in her intricately detailed pieces, Enedina creates figures that are inspired by her dreams. Her exquisite attention to detail has won her international acclaim and her reputation as an innovative artist continues to grow.

Although Enedina encourages her daughters to learn her art form and follow in her footsteps, she creates all of her own pieces, from start to finish. We are very fortunate to carry several pieces from this incredible artist, including a prize-winning nativity scene (Angel with a nativity on her skirt).
