The very unique Mexican Day of the Dead,
November 2, began as an Aztec celebration originally observed in August.
Skeletons, skulls, and later devils were understood as symbols of death,
rebirth, and the changing fortunes of humankind. The celebration
encouraged people to embrace a higher form of consciousness and make
peace with the natural cycles of life and death.
Today, November 2 is celebrated in
Mexico on many levels. From deep respect for relatives who have passed
over, to an unparalleled and bawdy insouciance for the talons of death -
either of the body or the spirit - the point of the day is to poke fun
at our fear of death. While these figures remind us of the impermanence
of life, they also remind us to laugh off some of the cruelest moments
life can deliver. When you've taken yourself too seriously, these Day of
