Black Pottery of Oaxaca

A distinctive ceramic process has brought much fame to the small village of San Bartolo Coyotepec of Oaxaca. For centuries, San Bartolo Potters have used a pottery firing process similar to Japanese Raku. Artisans of the village fire clays to create a jet-black, ash-covered surface, which when burnished with a smooth stone, produces a lustrous sheen, similar to a clear glaze over a black surface.

San Bartolo Coyotepec is the home of several highly acclaimed ceramic artists, the late Doña Rosa, the Carlo Pedro family, and Doña Candelaria Enriqueta. The Pedros continue to produce fine quality pottery in great demand by collectors. They are most noted for attention to proportion, detail and sculptural quality.

The Pedro Family makes both black pottery and sculpture. The most well-known is Carlomagno, born in 1965, who uses skeleton figures to illustrate Zapotec folklore; sister Adelina is best known for her wonderful angels and mermaids; Magdalena creates ladies in regional dress combining highly polished and matte surfaces. Antonio Euripides elaborates religious themes, and the parents make figures of the Virgin of Guadalupe, Benito Juarez and candle holders. Carlomagno has exhibited in Chicago, San Francisco, Saint Louis, as well as France, Germany, and Switzerland. His life-sized skeletons and figures of death are in major collections in the U.S. and Mexico. The work is inspired by old Zapotec legends told by his grandparents, in which fantasy mixes with reality and “nahuals”, which are people transformed into animals, do astounding and sometimes wicked feats. He also does large imaginative wall sculptures that project the magic of his legends.

El Interior is pleased to offer a very limited collection of the Pedro family's works, along with a broad selection of black pottery.
