El Interior has
everything from the distinctive, traditional talavera functional pottery
of Gorky Gonzalez to mural master, Salvador Vasquez; fragile and
beautiful green glazed pineapples and candelabras from Michoacan;
humorous terracotta rabbit musicians and angels from award winning
Master Don Jose Gonzalez. Additionally, the intricate terracotta work of
Enedina Vasquez is represented, as well as her sister Angelica Vasquez;
prized black pottery of San Bartolo Coyotepec, most notably the work of
Magdalena and Adelina Pedro; Fanciful toys and naguals are created by
Serapio Medrano and Juana Corral de Medrano. We also have the figural
ceramics and scenes by Josephina and Demitrio Aguilar and sisters
Guillermina and Irene Agiular; Whimsical bugs and scenes by Conception
Aguilar; classic work by innovator Dolores Porras; and a large
collection of modern and primitive pottery from the indigenous peoples
of Mexico and Guatemala. |

Enedina Vasquez is an artist from Atzompa, a village
located very close to Oaxaca City and just a few miles from
the archaeological site of Monte Albán. Using innovation
that she takes great pride in, Enedina broke from tradition
by creating new designs and techniques in clay that has won
her commendation from the ceramics community.

Josefina
Aguilar is perhaps one of the most collectable folk
artists today and is especially known for the whimsical
Market Ladies from her studio in Oaxaca, Mexico. These
painstakingly painted little clay vendors sell a variety of
wares - everything from iguanas, cats & chickens, to pots
and pans.

Guillermina Aguilar,
the eldest of the four famous Aguilar sisters, was born in
Ocotlán de Morelos, Oaxaca. Inspired by her fertile
imagination, her ceramic repertoire is rich. In the
beginning, she created simple animal figures and later
turned to more complicated female figures in highly detailed
costumes, down to their dangling earrings. Guillermina
clearly adores each figure she creates, caressing it as if
alive. She regards the faces of her pieces, which are
especially expressive, as her greatest contribution.

Concepcion Aguilar, the
youngest of the famous Aguilar Sisters, was only nine when
her mother died without teaching her the skills she had
previously passed on to her other daughters. However,
Concepcion developed her incredible skill with clay by
imitating her sisters. Perhaps because of her dedication to
creativity, she definitely holds her own with them today, &
some would even argue that she is the most innovative artist
among her talented family.

Black Pottery, with its
incredible sheen and depth of color, is something that we
get asked about a lot at El Interior. Its incredible beauty
is timeless - which is partially why it inevitably draws
such a following of collectors. The Master Potters who work
with Black Pottery include the famous Pedro family, and the
process that's used in creating such works of art is truly
fascinating.

Gorky Gonzalez

hand-made pottery workshops in Mexico for the past 50 years.

as well as incredible artistry.

Francisco Flores and his wife are continuing the
tradition of making brightly painted and joyously decorated
"Trees of Life" candelabras and incense burners. These
objects were traditionally used for religious and ceremonial
purposes in Izucar de Matamoros, Puebla. Since Don Flores is
elderly now, we are sad to say it is an endangered folk art
since none of his children are currently interested in
making the pottery.
