| El Interior has an outstanding collection
of colorful, hand-woven and embroidered textiles including incredible Zapotec
rugs. All hand-woven on a backstrap loom, these rugs are made by the
master weavers of Mexico, the Montaño
family. The Montaño family is from Teotitilan del Valle and uses the old
Zapotec designs that have been passed down through the generations. They
are 100% wool—mostly handspun—and sizes range from 3x5 to larger. |

Estrella Estilizada (Stylized
Star) Zapotec Rug
by Alberto Vasquez Jimenez
A contemporary interpretation using traditional Zapotec motifs
by internationally known Alberto Vasquez Jimenez. The hand-spun
and hand-processed wools are dyed with the colors Vasquez is
famous for. The reds are conchineal; the blue is indigo, the
gold is amusgos, a rock lichen. The white, dark brown, soft
beige, and grays are made from natural colorations of the sheep.
The grays are made by carefully combining white and dark brown
wools and carding the mixtures twice. Signed by the artist's
initials, A.V.J.

Aguila Tradicional de Mexico (Traditional Eagle of Mexico)
by Adrian Montano.
The hand-woven design is a very old traditional Aztec eagle
motif with quetzal birds of Mexico. The handspun wools are in
the natural colorations of the sheep.
